Environmental Manager

As a member of the site leadership team, the Environmental Manager is responsible for leading the Environmental Department for the site in sustainable environmental compliance programs within the framework of our commitment to pursuing a higher standard. The Environmental Manager will be responsible for the performance of the following duties in a safe and productive manner:

Job Duties

  • Foster core values of growing people, safety, partnerships, margins, reserves and production as stated as part of our Four Keys.

  • Responsible for ensuring all tasks undertaken by the Environmental Department are completed safely and efficiently and in accordance with regulatory and company requirements.

  • Develop and implement strategies and budgets to ensure compliance with environmental policies, regulations, permits and licenses.

  • Evaluates technical data to prepare and facilitate the preparation of permit applications, work plans, assessments and regulatory reports.

  • Manage environmental activities and consultants related to air, water, water treatment, geochemistry, wildlife, reclamation, revegetation, sediment/erosion control, remediation systems, waste management and mine closure.

  • Oversee operation of biological and ion exchange water treatment plants onsite.

  • Oversee environmental consultants, contractors and employees.

  • Develop and mentor Environmental Department employees, and sustain a plan for each direct report for their career progression.

  • Informs the mine general manager and management team of regulatory requirements, impending regulations and compliance concerns, and areas for improving or enhancing compliance sitewide.

  • Regularly reviews, interprets and ensures compliance with all permits.

  • Develop and implement various components of environmental management systems.

  • Ensures that environmental documentation, files, records and maps comply with regulatory records retention requirements.

  • Effectively communicates regulatory conditions, compliance requirements and responsibilities to the mine general manager, corporate leadership, and other mine department employees by monthly reports, weekly and daily reports, and day-to-day verbal and written communications.

  • Prepares a sound environmental budget and monthly evaluates environmental and permitting program for sound budgetary management.

  • Work with company and State entities on reclamation and post-closure bonding, and complete annual ARO updates per company guidance and site reclamation status.

  • Oversee all water management both inside and outside the property boundary, including: quality, consumption, transport, treatment, discharge, measurement, permitting, accounting and reporting elements.

Position Requirements 

  • Follow all procedures and safety measures to assure safe production

  • Work in all conditions and environments, approximately 80% of job is outdoors

  • Able to lift 50 lbs. on an occasional basis

  • Able to walk up and down slopes and uneven ground daily

  • Relate to colleagues/vendors, regulators and the public with civility and integrity

  • Understanding of and ability to apply state and federal environmental laws and regulations, including permitting, reporting, mitigation/remediation, bonding, and day to day compliance assurance sitewide.

  • Strong knowledge with various sampling techniques and reporting procedures for air, meteorology, water, wildlife, reclamation, revegetation, sediment/erosion control, remediation systems, waste management and mine closure.  

  • Ability to manage multiple projects efficiently, prioritize tasks and work with minimal supervision to meet deadlines.  

  • Bachelors Degree in Geology, Engineering or a related Environmental Science.

  • 10+ years experience in environmental related fields, preferably in natural resource extraction industries.

  • Experienced in CAA, CWA, RCRA & Bevill Amendment, TRI, CERCLA, and other federal environmental programs as they relate to mineral extraction industries.

  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point, and Windows.  Autocad or ArcView experience is desirable.
