Health & Safety Manager

The Health & Safety Manager is responsible for the performance of the following duties in a safe and productive manner:

Job Duties (Not Limited to): 

  • Responsible for compliance to all federal and local regulatory requirements relating to health and safety such as MSHA and Workers’ Compensation.

  • Liaison with regulators and engage in conferences and legal contests of issued violations and regulatory actions.

  • Responsible for compliance with companywide and site Health, Safety, Security, and Risk strategies.

  • Responsible for developing and mentoring H&S team members to support growth strategies.

  • Oversee compliance to the safety H&S Management System.

  • Advise managers, superintendents, supervisors, and frontline workers on technical safety and health matters.

  • Provide managers, superintendents, supervisors, and frontline workers information regarding the health and safety status of the mine.

  • Develop and update safety and health policies, standards and procedures and help employees in interpreting this information. 

  • Support the execution of Mining Health, Safety, and Training Contractor Management Standard.

  • Oversee Critical Risk Management strategy to reduce and eliminate various high-risk exposures.

  • Regularly inspect the operation for compliance with MSHA regulations and company policies and standards.

  • Oversee site Emergency Response Team for operational readiness.

  • Lead and assist with incident investigations using InterSafe methodologies for root cause identification.

  • Responsible for initiation and submitting reports for work related injuries.   

  • Oversee all noise sampling and duties regarding compliance with the Hearing Conservation Program. 

  • Oversee respirator fit testing and all duties regarding compliance with the Respirator program.

  • Oversee site Medical Surveillance Program.

  • Attend crew safety meetings on a selective basis either as an observer or presenter.

  • Prepare and oversee H&S department operating budget. 

  • Oversee and assist with corporate and site Crisis Management Plan.

  • Ensure policies, standards, and procedures are applied in an equitable manner.

    • Willing to stop work for safety concerns and always abide by safety best practices, policies, standards, and procedures.

    • Hold and maintain CPR/AED certification.

    • A minimum of ten years’ experience in mining, or related field, or will accept education plus experience.  

    • General knowledge of mine operations, maintenance operations, and process operations.

    • Proficient use of personal computer Microsoft Office programs.

    • Attend and complete company training programs.

    • Must be able to work with other people, capable of multi-tasking, and be self-motivated.

    • Possess an MSHA instructor certification for “Instructor Surface”.

    • Liaise with outside entities such as MSHA, NSC, local Fire and Rescue agencies, Occupational Health Network, other mines.

    • Some travel may be required.

    • Further knowledge and education in related field is realized as available and/or needed.

    • Professional integrity of the highest level is always required.

    • Other duties as assigned.
